Lingo School Holiday Programmes

A uniquely human process, at once individual and shared, which cannot be outsourced even as artificial intelligence makes landfall in our technology-driven world. Philosophical inquiry is what makes us homo sapiens sapiens, the man who knows that he knows. It is what makes us humane.

At first glance, philosophy seems inaccessible with its dense terminology and complex arguments, but really, inquiry and debate come naturally to our children! Across the world, there is a growing movement to teach philosophy to children from the age of 8, gently introducing them to rigorous standards of reasoning and writing.

Philosophy for Children (P4C) helps our young to make sense of themselves and the world around them, giving them the confidence to pursue their dreams and live out their principles. Theory of Knowledge, for these reasons, is an important subject in the International Baccalaureate, and it’s no surprise that many philosophy graduates have gone on to successful careers in business and technology.

This November and December, let your child discover philosophy for the first time through Greek myths & storytelling. It will be a journey like no other.

Sign up online for a 4-day workshop ($400). No registration fees. No deposit.

To ensure quality instruction, workshops will be held with 2-6 students. Fees are inclusive of textbook, classroom supplies and refreshments.

Instructor Profile

Laura TAN

Having worked closely with Lingo since 2015, Laura will officially launch its Philosophy for Children (P4C) program on this 15 November, coinciding with World Philosophy Day.

An RJC alumni, she trained in Political Science, Philosophy and Asia-Pacific Studies in Canada and China, establishing her academic credentials in both English and Chinese. Laura was a recipient of the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce Overseas Scholarship, Johns Hopkins University SAIS-Hassenfeld Fellowship and York University Graduate Fellowship for Academic Distinction. She was made an honorary fellow of Calumet College in 2009.

Having worked in the related fields of research, policy consultancy, education and translation for close to 15 years, Laura finds true joy in introducing young learners to concepts and processes outside exam-oriented curriculum. She has developed and taught drama workshops for Viva Kids Social Enterprise, and summer camps in robotics and forensics for the Keys Academy.

Laura’s niche, unsurprisingly, is creating and delivering learner-specific content grounded in cultural practices and aligned to swiftly-evolving global expectations. In 2019, she will be teaching bilingual classes in philosophy, global issues and dramatic expression for Primary 3-5 students.

Above all, it is Laura’s tireless approach to ensuring an optimal learning environment for students of all abilities that makes her an outstanding educator. Sign up for the holiday workshops to find out for yourself.
